Who qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period?

Outside of the annual Open Enrollment Period, you can only change plans if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

If you recently lost medical insurance coverage or experienced another qualifying event in the past 60 days, a Special Enrollment Period lets you enroll in a new health plan immediately, even if it is outside of the annual Open Enrollment Period.

Qualifying Special Enrollment Period Events:

  • Loss of employer health insurance
  • Marriage or divorce
  • Adopting a child
  • Moving from one insurance coverage to another
  • Changing your immigration status
  • Turning 26 years of age (or the maximum dependent age allowed in your state) and can no longer be on a parent’s health plan
